Joining the Obama Campaign
Sep 4th, 2008 by nick
I want to get involved in the Barack Obama campaign here in Colorado Springs, but it’s been difficult to figure out how, given my limited free time. Yesterday, I took a first stab at it by signing up for the Neighbor to Neighbor program on my.barackobama.com. After giving my address, I was presented with a list of 25 people in my neighborhood who I am supposed to contact. I believe these people are all registered but sporadically voting Democrats.
I figured there wasn’t a better time than during the Republican National Convention to start knocking on doors, so headed out after dinner with my five-year-old, who was quite excited to tell people to vote for Obama. Unfortunately, given the demographics of my neighborhood, Democrats are few and far between, with only a few on each street. We managed to talk to only two of the people on the list, only one of whom is actually supporting Obama. I also discovered that I need a bit of practice in talking to people confidently about Obama. And I forgot to give out the flyers that are supposed to be part of this initiative. But at least it’s a start, and I’ll hopefully be able to ramp up my involvement in the next two months before the election.
I’m impressed that you actually went and knocked on people’s doors! I would be very nervous about doing that, partly because I don’t know how to talk confidently about Obama, even though I’m 100% sure we need to elect him over McCain.
