The Inevitability of Gay Marriage

So, some gay folks got married in California and the world didn’t come to an end. The “institution of marriage” still appears to be in effect — millions of straight people didn’t suddenly decide to divorce. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that these marriages didn’t actually have an affect on anyone except the newlyweds and their wedding parties. Well, maybe the press benefited a bit.
Seriously, it’s time for opponents of gay marriage to give up their losing battle and acknowledge its inevitable presence in our society. These opponents of gay marriage increasingly come across as strident, antediluvian, and out of touch. No matter how much they might want us to believe that gay marriage will bring on Armageddon, the truth is that it just doesn’t affect most of us. The recent California decision is justifiably earth shattering only to those previously marginalized members of our society who now have the ability to declare their binding commitment to those whom they love, and receive the legal benefits of the institution of marriage.
