Self-Destructive Politics

A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll indicates that 17% of Clinton supporters will vote for McCain if Obama doesn’t select her as his running mate. And an additional 22% would refuse to vote for Obama.
I don’t get it.
I understand the vehement support for Clinton and the desire to see her in the White House. I understand the disappointment that she lost such a close primary race.
I like Hillary Clinton, and think she would have made a great president. But my original preference for her is vastly overwhelmed by my desire to see a president, any president, who will move this country in the right direction. Hillary Clinton could have been that president, but so can Barack Obama. Frankly, their positions on the issues are practically indistinguishable. I really don’t care which one of the two moves in to the White House.
In order to avoid the third Bush term of John McCain, Democrats need to cease this internecine bickering and support the true progressive remaining in the race: Barack Obama. As a progressive, voting for McCain instead of Obama isn’t just cutting off your nose to spite your face. It’s full-fledged decapitation.
