Remember the Sabbath

A Jewish high school in Denver, the Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy, is two wins away from the basketball championship game. However, even if they make it to the final game, they won’t be able to play because it’s supposed to take place on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath.
Thus far, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has refused to reschedule the game, despite the fact that it currently prohibits any sports activities on Sunday, for a “day of rest.” That sounds a bit hypocritical to me. Unfortunately, the CHSAA Commissioner doesn’t get it. He says,
“Sunday is a logical day, because people don’t work on Sunday. There’s no school. It’s been picked by society to say that’s a day when people from a family are together. And so why not make that the day of rest.”
No, that day hasn’t been picked by “society” at large. It’s been picked by Christians. Jews have a different day of rest, and failing to accommodate them amounts to favoring one religious tradition over another.
