How McCain Helps the Democrats
Feb 5th, 2008 by nick
James Dobson, of Focus on the Family infamy, released a statement today that reads in part:
“I am convinced Sen. McCain is not a conservative, and in fact, has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are… I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience… I certainly can’t vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on their virulently anti-family policy positions. If these are the nominees in November, I simply will not cast a ballot for president for the first time in my life…”
That’s what I like to hear! If Dobson is a reasonable bellwether of the rest of the radical religious right, a John McCain candidacy would be great news for the Democrats.
That’s sort of reassuring, but I think it’s actually really frightening how everyone thinks McCain is some sort of liberal, fake Republican. He’s NOT, he is actually very conservative. Check out this opinion piece about him, which points out how hawkish and pro-war he his: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/348434_mccainonline24.html?source=mypi
And he is of course completely ANTI-family (to co-opt the phrase the radical right uses; it boils my blood to hear them act like they actually care about families) - anti-choice, anti-reproductive rights in general, wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, etc.
So what worries me is that if he is the nominee, some Democrats and independents will vote for him rather than the Democratic nominee, because of this illusion that he is somehow liberal.
