A Misguided Attempt to Celebrate MLK Day
Jan 22nd, 2008 by nick
For the past four years, a Colorado Springs middle school has been sending only black students to a district-wide MLK Day Celebration. Many in the news media have pointed out the incredible irony of segregating students in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. However, fewer have pointed out what I see as the critical district-wide flaw: This celebration should be available for all students in the district, not just a select few, regardless of how those few would be chosen. It is of paramount importance to expose our children to the sad history of racism in the United States and the inspirational work of Martin Luther King and others in their attempts to overcome it. Next year, the district should find some way to make this event available to everyone.
