So it turns out that Colorado Springs’ reputation as a haven for right-wing wackos isn’t entirely unearned. Douglas Bruce, former member of the El Paso county board of commissioners and recent appointee to the state House of Representatives, is proving to be an increasing embarrassment to the city. This editorial in the Colorado Springs Gazette captures his recent shenanigans. They’re mostly innocuous, if self-serving and self-aggrandizing, although you know things are bad when the leader of his own party says, “This is the House of Representatives. It is not the House of Bruce.” But Bruce’s one unforgivable act, in my opinion, was kicking a photographer who was taking his picture! I hope that the photographer, Javier Manzano, presses charges.
I understand that there are people out there like Douglas Bruce. What I don’t understand is why he continues to be elected and appointed to public office. This man does not and should not represent the people of Colorado Springs.
